You are not looking for the buck. That's my job. Your job is to be ready to shoot.
Stalking and Stealth
As we walk or sneak up to valley edges and tree lines, we move slowly and quietly, and we play the wind. Stealth, stalking, and being ready to shoot all go together. If you bump a big buck once, he may not show himself again for days.
Getting Into Position Fast
When we stop, you get into position. If there's no tree or tripod to rest on, get into a kneeling position. Or find a prone position, drop your backpack, and stabilize the shot on it.
Using a Rest: Trees, Tripods, and the Polaris
If there's a tree or a tripod, use it. My Polaris, the off-road vehicle we use, often works as a shooting stand too, and you can brace yourself against it.
Why Quick Decisions Matter
Quick decisions matter. A few moments of indecision and the buck moves into a position where you can't shoot him, or you can't get close enough to shoot him. That's why staying ready is so important.
